January 5, 2008 -- Britney Spears has not only lost her mind, she's lost her kids thanks to an out-of-control night of vodka-swilling that ended with the pop wreck being wheeled into a Los Angeles loony bin, reports said.



As Spears remained under suicide watch in the Cedars-Sinai psychiatric ward last night, a family court judge ruled that the free-falling starlet should have no contact with her sons Sean Preston, 2, and year-old Jayden James.

Until lawyers reconvene on Jan. 14, ex-husband Kevin Federline will have sole custody.

The meltdown reached its boiling point Thursday night when Spears became so distraught over her ongoing child-custody battle that she guzzled vodka before getting wheeled into the hospital psychiatric ward, sources said.

Spears spent Thursday drowning her sorrows in a bottle, according to pagesix.com, in the hours before she was to routinely turn over the two kids to K-Fed's bodyguards.

That's when Spears locked herself and Sean Preston in a bedroom suite, prompting a call to Los Angeles cops and firefighters around 8 p.m.

Under the visitation-rights agreement in place Thursday, Spears was barred from drinking or using drugs in front of her kids.

It took brute force - Spears' personal assistant Alli Sims armed with a hammer - to break down the bathroom door and free Sean Preston, according to the Web site.

In all, it took three hours for rescuers to pry the pop tart out of her house.

When paramedics wheeled the singer out of her $4.5 million Beverly Hills mansion around 11 p.m., Spears flashed a crazed smile as her ankles were restrained to the gurney.

Her ankles were still strapped down when she arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center while her hands were free from restraint - allowing the dazed and confused starlet to flip an obscene gesture to photographers documenting her rapid descent into madness.

The restraints, generally used on out-of-control psychiatric patients, were necessary because the flipped-out Spears "was going between laughing and hysterics," according to usmagazine.com. Laughing

While Federline took the kids, doctors kept a 'round-the-clock vigil over Spears.

Treating the bizarre outburst as a potential suicide attempt, hospital staffers reportedly took away all her personal belongings and asked her if she wanted to hurt herself.

A doctor also grilled Federline, asking if Spears might be a threat to herself, according to pagesix.com.

Doctors deemed Spears, 26, a "special needs" patient - a designation typically given to patients who overdosed or tried to commit suicide, a source told usmagazine.com.

Son Jayden James was also taken to the hospital and treated for a bruise that Spears denied any role in inflicting, sources said.

"Just say prayers [for Britney]," Spears' mother, Lynne Spears, told celebrity news show "Access Hollywood."

As soon as courthouse doors opened yesterday morning, Federline's lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan and Spears' soon-to-be-ex lawyer Tara Scott rushed in.

In his custody decision, LA Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon wrote: "Respondent [Federline] is awarded sole legal custody and sole physical custody of the minor children. Petitioner's [Spears'] visitation with the minor children is suspended pending further notice."

Under state law, authorities have the right to keep patients hospitalized for up to 72 hours for psychiatric evaluation.

A hospital spokeswoman refused to confirm that Spears was even admitted to the posh West LA clinic, citing patient confidentiality laws.

Spears' breakdown could deal a devastating blow to her efforts to regain at least shared custody of the two kids.

She's already looking for new family-court lawyers after her high-priced attorneys from the firm Trope & Trope asked Gordon earlier this week to be relieved as Spears' counsel.

The firm cited a breakdown in communications with the "impossible" pop has-been, in begging off the case.

Spears and Federline had split custodial rights of the kids until Gordon awarded primary custody to K-Fed in October, citing fears the former teeny bopper might be abusing booze and drugs.

BREAKDOWN BRITNEY IS OUT OF 'CUSTODY'

January 6, 2008 -- Mad mama Britney Spears was secretly smuggled out of a hospital yesterday past hundreds of clueless paparazzi, only a day after cops strapped her to a gurney and forced her to get mental help following a harrowing, three-hour custody standoff.

Spears was quietly carried out of LA's Cedars-Sinai Medical Center via an underground tunnel, according to the Web site of the TV show "Entertainment Tonight."

But right before she left the hospital, the fallen pop star received a visit from **** -tube shrink Dr. Phil McGraw.

"My meeting with Britney and some family members this morning . . . convinced [me] more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention," the talk show host told "Entertainment Tonight" and "The Insider."

One relative who missed the Dr. Phil meeting was her mother.

Lynne Spears was home in Louisiana seeking solace at the graves of her parents and sister, Sandra Covington, who died a year ago from cancer.

It appears that her ex-husband, Jamie, who has publicly criticized some of Lynne Spears' decisions in the past, is taking charge in LA.

He was spotted at the hospital following his daughter's massive meltdown.

It all began on Thursday, when Britney barricaded herself in a bedroom, and ended when she was hauled away to the hospital psychiatric ward early Friday.

Later that day, she lost custody of her two kids to her ex-husband, Kevin Federline.

Britney Spears will check herself into a private loony bin to deal with her mental problems, according to PageSix.com.

* Before she was released, the troubled "Toxic" singer was ******** out in her hospital room, demanding to be sent home, screaming at the staff and even pulling out her IV, according to TMZ.com.

* Lynne Spears reportedly believes her troubled spawn deserved to lose custody of her two sons.

* The pop tart did nothing to soothe her panic-stricken, sobbing toddler while she kept him locked in her bedroom during Thursday's three-hour standoff with cops.

The drama began when a member of K-Fed's camp showed up at Spears' home to pick up the kids.

Almost immediately, the unstable superstar went into "total meltdown," a source who was inside Spears' home at the time told the Chicago Sun-Times.

That source told the paper Spears "had been drinking, which wasn't a good idea, since she was on [prescription] medications . . . As soon as Kevin's guy got to the House, she started screaming, then ran to her bedroom and locked and bolted the door."

Most disturbing, she took her "screaming" son, Jayden James, 1, with her.

London's News of the World reported that K-Fed was fearful that his ex was going to use a firearm on the frightened baby. Kevin had purchased Spears a 9 mm Beretta for her birthday, which was kept in the bedroom, and a Glock, the paper reported.


Cops were called, and the chaos inside the house escalated.

At one point, the desperate ex-wife freaked so bad that she tried to bite one of K-Fed's bodyguards in an effort to keep him from taking Jayden James, News of the World reported.

Finally, a restrained Spears was carried out of her Studio City, Calif., house on a stretcher.

The stars that kept wanting to sing and make music said to **** with the nasheville machine that they had fallen out of favor with and now branson has more stars perfoming there than in nashville. If Brit wants to keep going she will and her fans will chat about her online and she will still make music reguardless.

FRIEND: SHE'D TAKE DEATH BEFORE THE 'NUT HOUSE'

January 13, 2008 -- The young woman was adamant. "They're not sending me to the nut house!" she shouted into her cellphone.

"No one can make me go if I don't want to go - and I ain't goin'!"

It was last Tuesday evening, and Britney Spears was talking to a close friend as she cruised down Sunset Boulevard in her black sports car, followed by the swarm of paparazzi that pursues her everywhere she goes.

As the friend tried to reason with the star, her words - and her driving - became increasingly erratic.

"See that? I just went through another stop sign!" Britney shrieked. "See what you made me do? I'm gonna hurt someone out here!"

Then the 26-year-old made a chilling promise: "I'll kill myself before I let them lock me up again! So tell Mama and Daddy I said so!"

Just before she hung up, she uttered a final few words.

"Oh, my God," she moaned, "it's over for me."

As a reporter who has known and liked Britney for almost a decade, I find what she had to say utterly chilling.

In one short week, it seems, Britney's life has become a living nightmare, turning a troubled young star into a woman on the brink of insanity.

To add to the mess, Britney has just taken into her confidence - and apparently as a boyfriend - a British photographer.

For several years, Adnan Ghalib has been one of the many paparazzi who earn a wage simply by following Britney Spears' every move.

Originally from Afghanistan, he moved with his family to London in 1977 as a 5-year-old refugee, later settling in California, where he managed a strip bar before branching out as a paparazzo

Britney has been slipping off to hotels and spending the night with this guy for a couple of weeks now," one friend of the singer said.

"He always said he [wanted to] one day get Britney Spears in the sack, and I guess he finally has. She's giddy when she's around him."

He has reportedly sold photos of Britney for about $49,000 to an Australian magazine - though he vehemently denies it.

"I ain't sold s- - -," he responded Friday night when Us Weekly asked.

On Wednesday, the pair boarded a private jet heading for Mexico. They arrived back in LA Thursday night, when Britney was photographed sitting in a car at a gas station, wearing glasses and her favored disguise, a neon-pink bobbed wig - all the while puffing on an inhaler.

"She's used to people exploiting her," says one of her relatives. "She once told me: 'If I cut everyone out of my life who has tried to make a buck off me, I'd have no one.'

"She feels she's been exploited by lovers, assistants, managers, her ex-husband, her parents. This girl needs help, badly."

The fearful relative continued: "Actually, it's been this way for months. People assume that she's been on illegal drugs, and, of course, she has been [accused] in the past.

"But most of that stopped months ago when the court ordered frequent drug tests in the child-custody case between her and Kevin [Federline, her ex-husband].

"What no one in the family wants to admit is that she's probably bipolar."

Now, in desperation, the singer's parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears, along with Federline, have begun to undertake drastic action to help Britney.

They are said to be considering a number of scenarios.

But the most extreme option is for them to go to court and get an order that would force Britney into inpatient treatment.

If what took place when police raided Britney's home on Jan. 3 and had her hauled off to a hospital is any indication, she's in desperate need of professional help.

In the media frenzy, it was widely reported that Spears had a gun in the house, but I have learned from a Spears family source that this is untrue.

Her subsequent behavior in the hospital was certainly bizarre, to say the least.

"At times she was very quiet, then other times absolutely frantic," said one of the nurses who attended her.

"Everyone was afraid for her and even of her.

"At one point, she was crying about her sister [16-year-old Jamie Lynn] being pregnant, saying she would now be ruined, too.

"She was railing against her parents for screwing up both her life and her sister's. I mean, she was a real mess.

"Then, 15 minutes later, she would be sound asleep. She'd then wake up feeling very calm and happy. It was all very sad."

Oddly, the nurse also told me that Britney insisted on speaking to the hospital staff using a clipped British accent.

As the doctors struggled for a formal diagnosis, Britney's father rushed to her bedside, pleading with her to agree to psychiatric treatment.

But the star would not listen, screaming at him, "You're not going to lock me up! You can forget it! I'm not going!"

A further attempt by pop psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw to persuade Britney to seek treatment also backfired horribly.

"The kids are her life," said one of her confidantes. "She told me that she has no reason to live if she can't see her kids. So, yes, I'm afraid, very afraid."

And with good reason, it would seem.


I am reminded of an incident I witnessed three years ago, when Britney was at the height of her fame. She and I were chatting at a hotel in Los Angeles when she was panicked by the paparazzi who had gathered outside the building.

"Don't worry, we'll call in the double," said one of her handlers - and, sure enough, within 20 minutes, a young woman who was the spitting image of Britney showed up at the hotel.

"Oh, thank God you made it," the star told her.

Then the two went into a closet and switched clothing.

As the doppelganger made her exit, we watched from above while photographers went berserk taking the double's picture, setting off in hot pursuit when she left in Britney's car.

"Those dummies. They are so stupid. Look at them!" said Britney, relishing the deception.

"I don't know what I'd do if I actually had to live my own life 24 hours a day. Why, I think I'd go crazy."
